TEHRAN (IQNA) – A manuscript copy of the Holy Quran written on Papyrus has been put on display at a festival in Algeria.

According to al-Masa website, the owner of the copy says it dates back to some 1,000 years ago.

It is on show at the Noor festival underway in al-Zawya village in the northeastern province of Khenchela.

The owner says the manuscript has been passed down in his family for generations.

Papyrus is a material similar to thick paper that was used in ancient times as a writing surface. It was made from the pith of the papyrus plant, Cyperus papyrus, a wetland sedge.

Algeria is an Arab country in North Africa. Muslims make up about ninety-nine percent of the country’s population.
