TEHRAN (IQNA) – Saudi Arabia’s government said pilgrims willing to take part in this year’s Hajj must be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The Arab country’s health minister, Tawfig al-Rabiah, said COVID-19 vaccination is a precondition for taking part in the pilgrimage, al-Madinah newspaper reported.

He also said that necessary preparations must be made ahead of the pilgrimage to prevent spread of the virus, including the employment of manpower to sanitize and sterilize various places in Mecca.

Hajj is a pilgrimage to Mecca that every able-bodied and financially able Muslim is obliged to undertake at least once during their lifetime.

Some 2.5 million pilgrims from around the world flock annually to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina for the week-long ritual of Hajj.

But in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hajj was held with only a limited number of pilgrims of different nationalities residing in Saudi Arabia.
