Reforms in Bahrain Meaningless without A Constitution Approved by Nation
The senior cleric said in a statement that today, Bahrain lacks a constitution that is agreed upon by all the people, the Bahrain Mirror reported.
He added that the basis for any reform is a constitution deriving from the will of the people and drafted by a parliament elected in a fair and free election.
Without it, he underlined, there will be no serious reform in Bahrain and, therefore, no stability in the country, Sheikh Qassim went on to say.
Last month, too, the cleric said reforms that can resolve the problems and create sustainable security are those based on a new constitution that originates from the will of the nation.
He also said that the Bahraini people are ready for constructive and dignified dialogue to regain their political and non-political rights.
Demonstrations in Bahrain have been held on a regular basis ever since a popular uprising began in mid-February 2011.
The participants demand that the Al Khalifa regime relinquish power and allow a just system representing all Bahrainis to be established.
Manama, however, has gone to great lengths to clamp down on any sign of dissent.
On March 5, 2017, Bahrain’s parliament approved the trial of civilians at military tribunals in a measure blasted by human rights campaigners as being tantamount to imposition of an undeclared martial law countrywide.
King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa ratified the constitutional amendment on April 3, 2017.
