TEHRAN (IQNA) – Authorities of Imam Reza (AS) shrine in Mashhad are expanding the shrine’s facilities and infrastructure to improve the offered services to pilgrims.

Organization for Repair and Maintenance reported on the construction and restoration projects underway in Imam Reza shrine.

“The shrine area used to be 320 m2 prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. However, it has been expanded to over one million square meters after the victory of the Revolution, with some 50,000 m2 indoor space for pilgrimage,” said head of Organization for Repair and Maintenance Khalilollah Kazemi about the construction projects in a press conference held in the shrine.

He stressed that protecting the Islamic works of art in the shrine as well as establishing security for pilgrims were top priorities for the organization.

Kazemi also pointed to Imam Reza Museum as another massive project underway in the shrine. The construction of the 65,000-square-meter facility will be finalized in 2027. “The ancient and priceless objects on display in Central and Quran museums will be transferred to the new museum upon completion.”

Kazemi continued his remarks by enumerating a long list of repair and maintenance works scheduled in the shrine such as roofing Jomhouri-e Eslami Courtyard, changing cobblestones, installing canopies and illumination in the Holy Prophet Courtyard and other major courtyards, expanding the roofed pilgrimage area between Quds and Ghadir courtyards, restoration of Gowharshad Mosque, opening study spaces in porticos, etc.
